Libeco Home Belgium - Country Kitchen
Belgian Linen Weavers since 1858

Belgium and northern France have the best climate conditions in the world for growing flax - hence it's no surprise that Libeco, a business started by the Libeert and Lagae families in the 1850's in Meulebeke, Belgium, produces the best linen fibers mother nature can offer.  It's comforting to know that linen has been produced for thousands of years!  (Linen was the textile of choice for Egypt's mummies.)  Belgium's linen industry is rooted in the 11th century, and was as famous then for its superior products as it is today.

Linen accounts for just 1.5% of the world's textile consumption, due to the limited areas where flax grows best, and the costs involved in its manufacture.  Harvesting the flax plant and preparing its fibers for weaving requires many time-consuming steps, including retting (which allows fermentation to loosen the fiber from the stem), scutching (stripping the fibers), and hackling (combing).  Then the complex spinning and dyeing processes begin.  Linen not only becomes softer with use and washing, but the flax fibers become stronger, too.

Libeco's linens exemplify unpretentious luxury designed for everyday use.  They are easy to care for - just toss them in your washer, machine-or-line dry.

Country Kitchen Runners,
Napkins & Mats
Featured here are Libeco's classic country-kitchen designs.  We really love this look - warm and earthy, informal and inviting. Libeco's runners are designed to be placed as shown in "Amherst", across your table or counter for use with place settings.  Just one more European style device that makes a lot of sense.
